Mass detention of lawyers and jurists in Turkey

On September 11; 48 lawyers, seven trainee lawyers, four previously purged judges and a law school graduate were detained in police raids in Turkey.

Several bar associations; including those in major cities such as İstanbul, Ankara and İzmir; human rights groups and activists described the detentions as an attempt to silence the right of defense, calling for an immediate release of all detainees.

A total of 60 lawyers prepared an information note in which they explained how the operation constitutes an attack on the right of defense, joining calls for the release of detainees.
